CHRISTCHURCH

Rangi Ruru Girls’ School has once again excelled in the sports arena in bitterly cold conditions in Christchurch today.

In hail and snow the senior girls team won their section of the Christchurch Secondary School's Cross Country Championships held at Halswell Quarry this afternoon.

The championships are held every year as pre-cursor to the nationals which are also in Christchurch in a fortnight.

Rosa Flanagan won the Senior Girls race this afternoon by over a minute and a half and in outstanding fashion, in the midst of a hailstorm. Rangi’s Gabby Gray came in 3rd, with Annie Vincent 6th, Lucy Allison 7th and Kate Macdonald 8th. These results combined to take out the Senior Girls teams race. In the U16 girls race the Rangi team placed 2nd, with Abby Williamson (Rangi) home in 4th position.

Flanagan was also named Distance Athlete of the Year, Junior Non Stadia Athlete of the Year and Secondary School Non Stadia Athlete of the Year at the Athletics Canterbury awards dinner last Friday (24 May).
