In New Zealand we are very fortunate to be a land that has an abundance of talented kiwis. For this exhibition we have come across a young New Zealander with raw, natural untouched genius. When we do find that sort of exceptional talent it is important for us as a nation to embrace and encourage that talent.

Rebekah Codlin is a 19 yr old, self-taught artist from the Marlborough Sounds. Never taking art at school, Rebekah preferred to develop her style through her own experimentation. Correspondence school gave her the flexibility to practice her art, dance and guitar amongst her studies. At the age of 17 Rebekah decided to pursue art as a full time career after receiving encouragement from displaying her works locally.

In November 2012 Brancott Estate invited Rebekah to be their Artist in Residence, where she now paints regularly.

Currently her main subject choice is people. The phenomenal images she creates show immense understanding of the character that she is portraying. Rebekah’s images are so intricate and captivating that as you gaze into the eyes of the subject you feel a sense of familiarity, a sense of deep seated emotion. Then you discover her age of 19!

This exhibition at Terrace Downs entitled “Expressions” will be the first of its kind; it is a collection of paintings and drawings inspired by her exploration of the diverse emotions and expressions of people. The titles of her works are purposefully simple to allow the viewer the freedom to draw their own meaning. Each work carries a story unique to the viewer depending on how they interpret the expressions, and that is what makes it so outstanding.

“I am compelled to paint people, as I believe no other subject is more complex, emotive and thought provoking than the human being. I strive to capture the life within the people I paint, celebrating the diverse beauty and uniqueness within human nature. The many emotions and expressions in people are what inspire me to paint.” Rebekah commented.

Bookings to this exhibition opening are essential. Her exhibition opening will  feature a unique night where you are able to dine with Rebekah, enjoy great company, a delicious Buffet prepared by Terrace Downs wonderful chefs, and beautiful music from the soulful Kris Trousselot on the piano.

Opening night is Friday July 5th at 7pm priced at $45 pp and includes complimentary beverage on arrival.
Attendance is free to the exhibition and Terrace Downs welcomes visitors to the resort to view this exhibition which will run from the 5th July to the 1st August  during resort opening hours.
