It was a nail biting last two minutes that eventually saw Rangi Ruru Girls’ School win a hard-fought final in the Secondary Schools Super Touch competition on Wednesday 15 March, 6-5.

Rangi Ruru’s Assistant Director of Sport and Touch Team Manager, Mandy Anderson says the game against current title holders St Margaret’s, didn’t start well with the opposition scoring twice in as many minutes.

“Our girls didn’t let up at all and then with the score sitting at 5 all, with 2 minutes to go, we scored and after defending a set of six touches, the game was ours,” she says.

Anderson says with the South Island Secondary School Champs on the 25/26th March, this competition win is a good warm-up.

“We can take real heart from this, without question. The fact that the girls know they can come back and keep the pressure on right to the end is an excellent learning from this win tonight,” she says.

Rangi Ruru last held the Super Touch title in 2013 but had 6 consecutive wins from 2001-2006.

A large number of school supporters, including the Rangi Ruru sport mascot Sonic (as in “the hedgehog”) cheered the team’s win and will no doubt do the same at the South Island champs at the end of next week.
