Rangi Ruru Girls’ School will be rolling out the pink carpet a day early, celebrating International Women’s Day today.

Student Head of School, Emma Cushing, says a rained off day for athletics meant Thursday was now booked for that however no one ever complains about having fun a day early.

“There’s so much planned,” she says. “As everyone enters the school gates at the beginning of the day today, on the asphalt there will be pink chalk drawings that celebrate women and our Rangi Ruru #sisterhood. Each girl will also receive a pink paper doll onto which she will write the name of a woman who inspires her and explain why. Then we will make all of these into a mural or bunting for everyone to be able to read.”

Emma heads the Student Leadership Team that has adopted #sisterhood as their school wide theme for this year.

Rangi Ruru has a strong and proud history with generations of strong women leaders from the original and innovative Gibson Sisters who established Rangi in 1889 to our current generations coming together to celebrate International Women’s Day.

“It’s the 125th year of women’s suffrage and together with all that is going on in the world it seemed the ideal theme,” says Emma.

The highlight of the plans for today will undoubtedly be the entire school including teachers dancing on the front lawn to “I Came Here for Love”, at lunchtime (1235pm) – all of the girls will gather 10-15 minutes before lunch.

The Student Leadership Team will be selling a #sisterhood badge, specially designed by Hilary Royds (Yr 13), for $4 with $1 from each badge going towards a women’s charity still to be confirmed.

Other activities:

-  During lunch, a Brownie Bar will be running. All proceeds go to a women’s charity.

- ‘This is us’ banner. This banner is to capture our family nature, showing we are all different but all a part of the #sisterhood. Girls are encouraged to draw a picture of themselves on the banner which will be hung in the Canteen.

- There will be picnic blankets and music for a fun and friendly atmosphere.
