WARKWORTH

Police and emergency services are trying to expedite the reopening of SH1 south of Warkworth following a fatal crash.

A car left the road at the intersection with Toovey Road, 2kms south of the township and indications are that the 80 year old male driver may have suffered a heart attack leading to the incident.

The woman passenger in the vehicle, believed to be the man's wife, was uninjured and is being taken to be with relatives.

An off-duty police member witnessed the crash and was able to immediately begin CPR.

This was continued upon the arrival of ambulance staff to no avail.

The only available diversions take traffic some considerable way away from the main highway and steps are being taken to have lanes open by 2.00pm.
