Today work commenced on the 3 million dollar upgrade of the Waitakere Badminton Centre.The project first commenced in 2005 but has been delayed due to Building and Resource consents which have now been overcome. This delay has impacted on building costs however Paul Shirley (Treasurer) is confident that the short fall in funds will be found.
The chairman Peter Beckerleg was quoted as saying that with three additional courts, new offices, pro shop, gymnasium and living quarters it will be recognised as the finest badminton facility in the Southern Hemisphere. Stage 1 which is the building of a ring road around the hall and a further 35 car parks should be completed in July weather permitting.
Badminton Waitakere have also secured a major sponsorship deal with Prince, Leisurerite Spa Pools &
Waitemata Badminton Shop which will see all members of their masters and vets teams outfitted in new tracksuits,
two playing shirts, two rackets, and a Sharapova racket bag which has a retail
cost of $750.00 member. Waitakere masters chairman Paul Shirley was quoted as
saying even if we don't play any good we will certainly look the part.
