Wild winds batter South

INVERCARGILL

Southern residents took a battering yesterday and are still taking it today.

Winds gusting up to 120kmh were recorded yesterday causing the Bluff harbour master to issue a warining for boat owners to check their moorings.

Metservice attributed the high winds to a deep low in the South and were reporting 65kmh winds at 9am this morning which should move past the lower South Island this evening

The rough weather has created havoc through out Invercargill and the surrounding areas with numerous emergency callouts and traffic disruptions dur to debri on the roads.

Electricity company Powernet told The Southland Times high winds had cause powerlines to come down in Invercargill suburb Otatara.

The Stewart Island frerry crossing was cancelled and will resume when the weather subdues.

Metservice are predicting the South West wind to drop and turn North West this evening with 6m swells off Fiordland.
