A strong Southerly has battered the whole country over the last few days causing problems across the South Island and bringing snow to some low laying areas.

Metservice readings had Dunedin making just 6deg yesterday and at 9am today metservice had a reading of 4deg, however, Invercargill only made 5deg yesterday and are currently at 4deg.

This in perspective to the North Islands East Coast reaching 21deg yesterday.

The weather has also caused problems in Canterbury hampering a search and rescue operation looking for a missing hunter. The search is now into it's 5th day.

Canterbury has seen a stark contrast to the long weekend where Christchurch residents were seen wearing shorts and t-shirts.

Invercargill and Dunedin along with most of the country will continue to feel the brunt of the weather system untill Saturday afternoon.

Though the cold weather has forced most to rug up and bring out the thermals several ski fields have reported good snow falls and some are aiming for season openings this weekend.

More snow is predicted in Southland and Otago tonight and on Saturday with calm weather arriving on Sunday.
