A man was taken to Waikato Hospital suffering from a broken arm and dislocated shoulder following a bank collapsing on him near Ngahinapouri this morning.

The man was working for a local contracting company fitting a cow underpass under Ngahinapouri Rd when the bank collapsed on top of him about 7.40am.

Senior Sergeant Kevin Anderson of Hamilton Police said the man had been working on a farming property when part of the bank where he was working gave way.

"He was trapped from about the chest down and his co-workers dug him out by hand.

"Treated at the scene by St John Ambulance staff he was then taken to Waikato Hospital and is being treated for a dislocated shoulder and broken arm," he said.

Occupational Safety and Health inspectors are now investigating the incident.
