TARANAKI

Now is a good time for homeowners to clear stormwater grates and any open drains around their homes, as heavy rainfall approaches from the south.

The Met Service has advised the heaviest rainfalls in Taranaki are due between this evening and tomorrow (WEDNESDAY) morning, with peak intensities of 25mm-35mm per hour possible.

Manager Water and Wastes Brent Manning is encouraging home owners to have a quick check around their properties and remove any leaves or plant litter from stormwater grates or open drains (such as creeks).

“This is about preventing any potential property damage before problems can arise,” says Mr Manning.

“This rainfall warning isn’t any different from the downpours we can get from time to time throughout the year, but checking for plant debris build-up on your property before any heavy rainfall event is a good habit to get into.

“If the stormwater grates or drains are blocked, rainwater could quickly build up and bring with it flood damage that could have easily been avoided.

“Also, having a quick check today might be particularly important if last week’s strong winds created a build-up of leaf litter and twigs around your property.”

The Council is responsible for keeping clear any drains and grates on road reserve and in parks. These are checked weekly and before any forecast heavy rainfall.

Anyone seeing a blocked Council drain or sump in an urban area can call NPDC on 06-759 6060 to report it.
