Man stabs himself in Wellington District

At about 12 40pm on Tuesday the 30th of June 2009 a 30 yr old male has stabbed himself at the Wellington District Court.

The male was in the dock awaiting sentencing and was seen to remove his shoe and put it back on again.

He was sentenced to a term of 6 months in prison and while being lead from the court room he bent down as if to do up his shoelace.

He was told he could adjust his foot wear once out of the court room.

The male stood up and without warning used a knife he had removed from his shoe while bending down and stabbed himself in the neck.

Court security staff disarmed the man and carried out first aid until ambulance staff arrived.

He was taken to Wellington Hospital and subsequently underwent surgery.

Police are not considering prosecution for any criminal offences.
