The reshaping of Yarrow Stadium’s northern embankment will begin in the next few days.

The project will see the high terraces reshaped into a hill with grassed standing terraces for 9,500 people.

“Contractors will be laying new drains and building concrete stairways, then filling and shaping the hill to take these shallow terraces,” says Manager Projects Team Jeff Bondy.

“The terraces will have anti-crush barriers about every eighth terrace, and we’ll top the terraces off with turf so that we’re ready to go for the All Blacks-Irish test match next year.”

The project will take about 20 weeks to complete.

Meanwhile the new drainage system for the main field is almost completed, and trucks have started to bring in sand to provide a medium for re-grassing the sportsfield.

“It’s a hive of activity at the ground right now,” says Mr Bondy.

“There will be 70 truck and trailer movements to bring in all the sand, which will cover the entire field to 50mm deep.

“The work on the field should be completed by the end of this month, after which our turf experts will be working on growing a good cover of grass.”

The redevelopment of Yarrow Stadium includes improvements to seating, electricity and data infrastructure, and the Star Gym car park, which will bring the stadium up to Rugby World Cup criteria.

This will increase the venue’s capacity from the current 17,000 (without temporary seats) to 23,760. (Temporary seating will increase the capacity to 25,680.)
