There is nothing quite like the spice of India. The riot of intense flavours and colours of Indian cuisine is a metaphor for country itself. The nation’s geography, customs and religions, along with neighbouring cultures, have been embraced and absorbed to shape contemporary Indian cuisine.
Take a flavourful journey through India at Auckland Museum. Join broadcaster and chef Bharat Jamnadas on August 14 for a demonstration of Indian cooking followed by food tastings. As well as hosting a popular cooking segment on Asia Downunder, Bharat has contributed recipes for the likes of Cuisine magazine and Julie Biuso’s award-winning cookbook Fresh.
Bharat will prepare pakhoras, a dish popular in most parts of India and South Asia. The savoury vegetable fritters contain some of the most frequently used spices and vegetables in Indian
cuisine. To accompany the food, there will be a variety of Indian dance and music including the boisterous Bhangara boys (Punjabi dance music combining traditional bhangra drumming with modern Western instruments and rhythms), Tabla players and classical dancers.
The World on Your Plate series allows you to experience incredible foods from some of the 181 ethnic groups that call New Zealand’s largest city home.
The following Saturday, August 21, is the Dutch World on Your Plate
