New Plymouth District Council is keeping a close eye on the Coastal Walkway as a storm system advances.

Swells of up to 7m are predicted along Taranaki’s coastline this weekend, which would make the Coastal Walkway section below the Woolcombe Terrace cliffs too dangerous for use.

“If the seas become too rough for public safety we’ll close that section of the walkway, and the public will need to keep out of it until the safety barriers are removed,” says Manager Parks Programmes Steve McGill.

“We’re monitoring the situation and taking advice from Taranaki Regional Council’s weather advisories, and we’ll be onsite at the Coastal Walkway ourselves around each high tide to check on the sea conditions.”

The Council will also have arborists on standby this weekend in case the predicted high winds bring down any trees that require urgent removal.
