New Zealand’s most tender, tasty lamb was revealed today in Wanaka at the finals of the Beef + Lamb New Zealand Golden Lamb Awards, sponsored by Pfizer Animal Genetics.

Barbara and Lyn Murray and Murray Rose from Lawrence in Central Otago became the 2011 Glammies Grand Champions, with their Perfintex lamb processed at the winning plant, Alliance Mataura.

At the awards ceremony, held at the Upper Clutha A & P Show, Lyn Murray said “We are blown away with our success. We’re absolutely delighted and realise being finalists last year wasn’t a fluke.”

The Grand Champions took home a cheque for $2000, a magnum of Mt Difficulty Pinot Noir and the Glammies Grand Champion Trophy. The winners of each class received $500, a bottle of Mt Difficulty Pinot Noir and a winner’s plaque.

Greytown Butchery became Champion Meat Retailer with their brand, Wairarapa Texel.

The final was judged by Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist, Alison Shanks, All Black legend, Richard Loe, European Master Butcher, Keith Fisher and professional chef, Graham Hawkes.

Shanks said the quality of the lamb presented was extremely high. “Judging the best 20 lamb rumps in the country was a daunting task. They were all so tasty and juicy, making it hard to determine a winner. This reflects the talent, skill and hard work put in by all the finalists.”
