If there was to be an art exhibition that was described as ‘the most exciting representation of rural magic that the South Island has seen this year’, then this upcoming exhibition at Terrace Downs Resort, entitled “Rural Connections” would be it.
Two special New Zealand artists Amy Preston and Lynne Iggulden will join their talents with the beautiful voice of Kris Trousselot at Terrace Downs for the month of April to add an extra flavour to the upcoming Celebrating Selwyn Event.
Their stunning collection of artworks, unite the rural North and South Island together and launches on the 31st of March at 6pm with a special discounted 5 star menu.
This is a collection of art that emanates the essence rural life in New Zealand.
Lynne Iggulden, has been painting and drawing since early childhood and now paints full time from her home studio in Papamoa, Tauranga; in the picturesque Bay of Plenty, New Zealand.
Lynn’s works reveal secrets that lie under the soft, subtle, palette and intricate attention to detail that she paints, she specialises in ‘Contemporary Realism’ and her paintings portray a passion for detail, texture and the presence of light and shade and the desire to ‘capture a moment’, or simply showing a ‘passage in time’.

Lynne paints a wide range of subjects – however; her greatest passion is detailed texture, where the viewer will often feel the urge to reach out and interact with the painting, “from trying to peel the paint from an old barn door to picking the rust off a rusty bolt”.

Lynne was invited to participate at the seventh edition of the highly prestigious Florence Biennale which was held in Florence, Italy in December 2009’. And it is through this that Lynn’s connection to Selwyn is made.

Lynne took a job as the security of a Bankside, Rakaia property during the clean up of the secret world war II Bunker. For 5 months in the depth of our winter Lynne lived in a small caravan on the property and painted until she raised enough funds to fly to Italy.

“Just to be invited was unbelievable, seventy eight countries were represented by 647 artists that came from all over the world. I was told by one of the journalists that mine was in the top 10 percent. Kofi Annan said that barriers can be broken down by art and this is so true even with language barriers, so many of us are connected with each other through our shared passion of trying to perfect our art.”

North Canterbury artist, Amy Preston expresses her creativity by working as a graphic designer by day, and by night she shifts the focus to painting. Amy has sketched and painted from an early age, supported by a family who all share a passion for drawing, painting, creating and inventing.
Born in 1983, Amy has a Bachelor’s Degree in Design Studies and Marketing from Otago University. On returning home to Southland after overseas travel and previously working in Auckland for several years, Amy has started her own graphic design business, All Out Design Ltd.
Not one to sit idle, Amy’s spare time is usually spent painting artworks for sale in local cafes or for friends, but now intends to seriously focus on developing her painting profile. She is still experimenting with subjects and styles, not yet settling on anything in particular. “I like to paint interesting and bright pieces that capture attention, and draw the viewer in for a closer look.” Amy usually works in acrylic on canvas, but is now experimenting with other mediums.
Some of Amy’s latest works combine ink and gouache on plywood board, merging her detailed drawing ability with a bright graphic technique.
Amy’s paintings need to be looked at, not glanced at, to allow them to reveal their secrets. No Detail of magic is missed making Amy’s works most sort after, particularly by the rural communities. This was indeed highlighted with her successful solo exhibition at Fusion Gallery late last year.
Rachael Inch, Director of arts remarked “These artists have approached seemingly ordinary rural moments and made them extraordinary. These works are completely different from the norm and create rural atmosphere that is quite different from our daily experiences, the paintings breathe life into our surroundings and invite us to learn more about ourselves by studying the intricacy of the brushstrokes in each piece.
Individually, the paintings are beautiful but when viewed collectively are so breathtaking that the anticipation for this opening is certainly growing in momentum as the word has been spread through the NZ art scene a show not to be missed”.
The top class menu and night of entertainment has been set at $45 for two courses and $55 for three, and includes one complimentary glass of bubbles. Bookings are essential and can be made through info@terracedowns.co.nz , by phoning Rachael 03 3186505 or texting 021 1229317
