Urban Search and Rescue To Work With Venturer Scouts in Kaiapoi

It will be the heat of their own ambition that keeps them warm over the next few days.
 

Twenty eight South Island Venturer scouts, aged 14-18, will be camping at Blue Skies in Kaiapoi from tonight, as they work towards their Queen Scout award, the highest achievement in the organisation.
 

Scouts NZ Regional Development Manager for the Upper South Island, Mike Blackburn, says one of the highlights of the 5 day camp will be the training sessions with Urban Search and Rescue team members (USAR).
 

“This is a huge opportunity for the Venturers to learn first-hand from highly skilled and experienced rescuers, many of whom are Scout Leaders as well,” says Mike Blackburn.
 

He adds the Venturers will be using their knowledge and skills to gain their Queen Scout Award and can also apply what they have learnt towards earning the new “Be Prepared” badge.
 

“We have just launched the badge for Canterbury Scouts and so those from the region at the Venturers camp can certainly use what they learn towards the new badge,” he says.
