Hutt City Council’s road and traffic and emergency management teams have spotted the obvious solution to different signs doing the same job and adding clutter to streets outside Lower Hutt’s civil defence centres. One bigger combined sign.

Road & Traffic contracts officer, Nigel Parkin says his team progressively replace directional signs across the city every year.

“When Peter came knocking about replacing the civil defence signs we looked at making it simpler for everyone.”

Pictured above are Nigel Parkin and Peter Walker with the first new sign for Randwick School in front of two very weathered ones.

The new signs are made of aluminium, last a lot longer and meet New Zealand Transport Agency's requirements. They’re now replacing many weathered wooden signs located outside 32 primary schools and other civil defence centres and will save up to $8000.

Emergency Management Advisor, Peter Walker adds one sign makes sense and people can get both messages from just one sign.

“It’ll cost less to get the same message across and we’ll have less clutter outside our schools which already have a lot of signage.”
