Two lucky diners from opposite sides of the world have won a year’s supply of New Zealand beef and lamb.

New Zealander Allan Beck and UK resident Henry Bate are the winners drawn from nearly 10,000 entries in the nationwide restaurant competition, run during the months of October to coincide with the influx of international tourists.

Anyone who dined at a Beef and Lamb Excellence Award restaurant in October and purchased a beef or lamb meal, went in to the draw to win a year’s supply of New Zealand beef and lamb valued at NZ$2,500.

Rod Slater, chief executive officer of Beef + Lamb New Zealand Inc, says the organisation was so overwhelmed by the response to the competition that instead of selecting just one winner, as originally promoted, two prize winners were drawn.

“We were inundated with entries and felt adding a prize to include one winner from New Zealand and one from overseas was only fair. Above all, it’s great to know we’ve created a successful formula for a competition which could easily become an annual promotion.”

Mr Slater says the beef and lamb meals received very positive comments from both New Zealand and international diners.

“Never have we had such a delicious, tender, melt-in-your-mouth lamb,” said one diner. “Best in the world!” said another.

Allan Beck and his wife were celebrating their wedding anniversary at Emberz at Ascot restaurant in Invercargill when they learnt of the competition. They decided to order a main of Hereford beef fillet each in order to gain two entries to the competition.

“We’ve never won anything like this in our lives. We’re absolutely over the moon,” says Mr Beck.

The United Kingdom winner, Henry Bate, dined at Hotel D’Urville in Blenheim.
