WELLINGTON CITY

The annual Wellingtonian of the Year awards were held last week at the Amora Hotel, with Wellington High School Principal Prue Kelly taking out the Education award.

The Education category, in association with Wellington City Council, celebrates individuals who have made education their life's mission.

Prue Kelly is retiring from her job as Principal of Wellington High School after 17 years. Her compassionate, no-nonsense approach to education and young people has won her many admirers and as many awards.

Under Prue Kelly's leadership the school has thrived, so much so that last year Wellington High received a glowing report from the Education Review Office and Prue Kelly won a national award for educational leadership. Her vision has led to the development of a style of learning other schools seek to emulate.

Other Education category nominees were Professor Kevin Gould, Victoria University, and Dr Claire Bretherton of the Carter Observatory.

This year is the 23rd Wellingtonian of the Year awards, now endearingly known as The Wellys. Father Des Britten took the top award - Wellingtonian of the Year.
