Two males used a sawn off air rifle to rob Jay's Supermarket yesterday in Manurewa.

At about 16:30 two males entered Jays Supermarket through the front entrance.

Detective Sergeant Eddie Sutherland said, "Male one was holding the cut down air rifle in his right hand and pointing it at the shopkeeper, demanding cash."

The second male entered the store immediatley after, the shop keeper opened the till, took out the money tray and handed it to the second male.

"Male two ran out of the store and the first male remained with the gun raised, he grabbed money off the counter and left," said Mr Sutherland.

Both males fled the scene in a black two door vehicle. The car was parked outside the store entrance facing toward Beatty Ave. The vehicle reversed backwards to a neighbouring factory and drove out onto Jellicoe Road and then turned into Jutland Road.

Later in the day, the two males were sighted for a second time on Cambridge Road, (off Glochester Road) Manurewa. They were dumping a stolen Mitsubishi Legnum ETM303, and left the area in a black two door vehicle. Witnesses reported the black cars number plate to be similar to UF8125, but they weren't 100% positive.

The Mitsubishi Legnum had been stolen earlier in the day from the Homai Railway Station situiated approximately three kms from the robbery. Police recovered an air rifle and cash tray in the Mitsubishi.

Before the robbery had occured there were reports of the two described vehicles racing in the Glouchester Road Area.
