Two men have been arrested and charged in connection to the death of a 27 year old Lower Hutt man last night.

Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Cooper of the Lower Hutt CIB says Police were called to Stokes Valley around 9pm last night after receiving reports of fighting.

“Upon our arrival, at the corner of George and Logie Streets, bystanders were performing first aid on the 27 year old victim. He was transported soon after to Hutt Hospital and was pronounced dead a short time later.”

He says a post-mortem examination on the body of the deceased will be carried out today, however it appears he suffered multiple stab wounds to the chest area, which were beyond medical intervention.

“Two men, aged 20 and 22 years later presented themselves at Lower Hutt Police Station and have subsequently been charged with common assault. They will appear in the Lower Hutt District Court today. Further charges are pending.”

D/S/S Cooper says, "At this stage we are beginning to piece together the events which led to this man’s death last night and we are appealing to anyone that was in the area of George and Logie Street to contact Police if they saw or heard anything suspicious last night.”

Police are investigating the connections between the deceased and the two men who have been charged.

The name of the deceased will not be released at this time until all next of kin have been advised.
