Tawa Shared Path Update

The first stage of the Tawa walking and cycling path is nearing completion, with work on the Grasslees Reserve section due to start next month.

This will connect Luckie Street with the new ramp in the Tawa Pool car park.

The Grasslees Reserve path will be built in keeping with the planned redevelopment of the reserve.

Councillors have proposed funding for this upgrade from the Plimmer Bequest Fund, which is used mainly to beautify areas of the city. If this gets final approval in June, we will be asking the community for feedback on the park's redevelopment.

The Tawa pathway broadly follows the Porirua Stream right through Tawa and incorporates a number of reserves. It will also provide good links across the valley and help to connect local schools with Tawa Pool.
Councillor Bryan Pepperell, the Council's Walking, Cycling, Motorcycling and Safety Portfolio Leader, is pleased to see the path being used.

"The benefits are already being seen by walkers and cyclists - it will be a real milestone to have this stage completed."

The New Zealand Transport Agency is funding 53 percent of the $3.5m project, with the Council funding the rest as part of our investment in walking and cycling networks. The pathway is expected to be completed in 2013.
