WELLINGTON CITY

Newlands town centre is undergoing a transformation.

A new supermarket is being built and work on the upgrade of the adjacent McMillan Court car park and mall area will start in a few weeks' time.

The changes are a key part of the Newlands Centre Plan, which is a long-term plan developed with the community over several years that aims to revitalise the suburb's shopping centre.

The Council went through a road-stopping process in 2010/11 so it could sell part of the car park to Foodstuffs, which needed the extra land to provide a large enough site for the supermarket.

The sale proceeds are part-funding the $1 million upgrade of the Council-owned car park and public space. The new-look car park will have an attractive courtyard area next to the supermarket entrance, more trees and native plants, better lighting, new seats, bike racks and public toilets, and terraced gardens at the Bracken Road entry.

The mall improvements - which will happen once the car park is finished - include new lights, paving and landscaping.

Work on the car park is expected to be complete in time for the opening of the supermarket later this year.
