Craft has always served a practical purpose – to fulfill a need in the household, or make use of discarded items to create something useful. Old wooden pegs were used to make dolls for children, wax was melted down into candles, animal fat was used to make soaps, and patches of excess material were sewn together to make a quilt for someone’s bed.

Today – there is very little need for craft, but is there a want for it? The answer is yes! You only have to type ‘craft’ into Google or Pinterest to find an infinite number of craft ideas, tutorials, images and videos – everything from tie-dye tees, to storage solutions, vases, jewellery, games, toys and costumes.

Craft and quilting provides something that store-bought items can’t: genuine items, made with love and care; something unique that’s incomparable to soulless, massproduced items; a product that hasn’t damaged the environment in its creation; something made exactly how you want it to be; and, best of all, something that was handmade by you!

It’s rare to find a quality, handmade item that doesn’t cost the earth, so why not just make it yourself? Crafting is inexpensive (often free) – plus it’s fun!

The Craft & Quilt Fair has everything you need to become a cunning crafter – displays of handmade crafts for inspiration, workshops so you can learn something new, and plenty of unique crafting supplies.

Visitors will enjoy features from home and abroad, such as the Aotearoa Quilters Exhibition, South Australia’s Cheryl Bridgart - a machine embroidery artist, and Sandra Chandler from the USA at the Punch with Judy stand. Those who’ve been to the Craft & Quilt Fair before will find their old favourites, as well as a range of exciting new features.

Even inexperienced crafters will have a ball: there’s a class program that caters to all levels, including free seminar-style workshops, one hour Craft Circle classes and two-hour late afternoon sessions.

Fair visitors can be inspired, learn and shop for their craft supplies all under one roof. So come along to learn how to fill your world with those ‘something specials’ – those one-of-a-kind items that stay with you, and will never be thrown away with the year’s latest fads. You’ll love it.
